HYROX Training London: The Proven 12-Week Race Prep Plan

If you’ve entered HYROX London โ€” or you’re about to โ€” you’ve probably discovered the problem: the race is exploding, but proper HYROX training London competitors can rely on is still surprisingly hard to find. Most people end up doing one of two things: they run more, or they lift more. Then they hit the sled on race day and find out neither was the answer.

HYROX isn’t a running race and it isn’t a gym workout. It’s eight 1km runs stacked between eight functional stations โ€” SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls โ€” and the thing it punishes most is unstructured preparation. At Body Transformation London we’ve watched the event go from niche to a 15,000-runner lottery, and we build race prep the way we build everything else: no gimmicks, science-backed, and measured.

Here’s how to prepare properly โ€” and what to avoid.

HYROX training London: why race-specific prep matters

HYROX has grown from a few hundred racers in Hamburg to over half a million participants worldwide, and London is one of its biggest markets โ€” demand for the London event now outstrips capacity, which is why entry moved to a lottery. (If you haven’t secured a place yet, check the official HYROX race calendar โ€” there are multiple UK events each season.)

That growth means thousands of Londoners are now training for something rather than just training. Good โ€” a race date is the single best adherence tool in fitness. But the format is deceptively specific.

The race punishes “compromised running.” Anyone can run 8km fresh. HYROX makes you run every kilometre after a station that has pre-fatigued exactly the muscles running needs โ€” quads after the sled, grip and posture after the farmers carry, lungs after the SkiErg. If your training never puts hard intervals immediately after heavy functional work, race day will feel like a different sport.

The race punishes missing strength. The sleds are the great equaliser. Runners who can clock a 45-minute 10k routinely lose four to six minutes standing behind a sled that won’t move. Strength work isn’t optional prep โ€” it’s half the race.

The race punishes guesswork. Eight stations, eight runs, one pacing question: how hard can you push without blowing up at station five? That’s not something you find out on race day. It’s something you rehearse, measure and adjust over an 8โ€“12 week block.

What a proper 8โ€“12 week HYROX prep block looks like

This is the structure we use with our own clients, adapted to each person’s starting point.

Weeks 1โ€“3: build the base and get a baseline. Full body-composition scan on the InBody, movement screen, and honest benchmarks: 1km repeat pace, sled push and pull at race weight, max unbroken wall balls. You cannot manage what you haven’t measured โ€” the same principle behind every body transformation we coach, and it applies doubly to race prep.

Weeks 4โ€“8: compromised running becomes the centrepiece. Two sessions a week pair stations with immediate run intervals โ€” sled work into 1km repeats, sandbag lunges into hill efforts. One dedicated strength session keeps building the engine behind the sled: heavy carries, leg drive, posterior chain. Volume climbs gradually; we’re building durability, not chasing exhaustion.

Weeks 9โ€“11: race simulation. Half-simulations and full dress rehearsals at target pace, practising transitions (the “Roxzone” between stations eats more time than most people believe), fuelling strategy and pacing discipline.

Week 12: taper and race. Volume drops, intensity stays, you arrive fresh.

Alongside all of it: nutrition coaching. Race prep with a fat-loss goal, or race prep at 50 with a full diary, is a very different problem from race prep at 25 โ€” the training and the fuelling have to be built around your body and your life, not copied from an Instagram plan. That’s the difference between a programme and a template.

HYROX training London mistakes that cost the most minutes

Most HYROX training London athletes do falls into one of two buckets โ€” running-only or bodybuilding splits โ€” and both leave minutes on the course. Here’s what we see, and what it costs.

1. Running-only prep. London is full of strong runners who treat HYROX as a running event with obstacles. The stations are where their race dies. If you can’t move the sled efficiently, no amount of aerobic base saves the split.

2. Bodybuilding-split prep. The opposite mistake: training chest, back and legs on separate days, getting stronger in isolation, and never once running under fatigue. HYROX is a concurrent-training event โ€” strength and conditioning have to be trained together, and the interference between them managed deliberately.

3. No measurement. Most people prepping for HYROX couldn’t tell you their sled split, their compromised-run pace, or whether they’ve gained or lost muscle during the block. Then they can’t work out why week eight feels worse than week four. We scan, we log, we retest. Numbers, not vibes.

We’ve written before about where HYROX fits โ€” and where it doesn’t โ€” the honest answer is that it’s a brilliant goal for most busy professionals if the preparation is structured. Unstructured, it’s just a very expensive way to find your weaknesses in public. Structured preparation is the difference between the HYROX training London athletes rave about and the generic blocks they abandon by week three.

HYROX training London at BTX: coached, private, measured

We’re a private personal training studio in Hampstead, not a group-class factory โ€” and if you’re weighing up the HYROX training London has to offer, that’s exactly the point. Here’s what working with us on a race block looks like:

  • A programme built off your data. InBody body-composition scan and benchmarks first, programme second. Every block is written for your body, your race date and your schedule โ€” including doubles pairs who want to train together.
  • Coached sessions, not supervised ones. Sled mechanics, wall-ball efficiency and pacing strategy are skills. You’ll be coached through them one-to-one, in a premium private setting.
  • Nutrition and accountability included. Fuelling the block, managing recovery, and a weekly check-in that keeps you honest when work gets loud. The same system behind every transformation on our results page โ€” pointed at a start line.
  • Convenient for the whole of NW London. We train clients from Hampstead, West Hampstead, Swiss Cottage, Belsize Park, St John’s Wood and across North London.

One honest note: we will never promise you a finish time, and you should walk away from anyone who does. What we promise is structured, measured preparation โ€” the thing the race actually rewards.

HYROX training London FAQ

How long do I need to train for HYROX?

For most people with a reasonable fitness base, 8โ€“12 weeks of structured, race-specific preparation is the sweet spot. Coming from a lower base, or chasing a significant improvement on a previous time, plan a longer runway โ€” exactly what we assess in your first session.

Can I prepare for HYROX with personal training instead of group classes?

Yes โ€” and for many busy professionals it works better. One-to-one coaching means your sled technique, pacing and programming are individually built, sessions fit your diary, and nothing about the block is generic. Group energy is great; individual attention wins races.

I’ve never done HYROX โ€” is it too late to enter?

No. HYROX offers singles, doubles and relay formats, and doubles in particular is a very accessible first race because stations are shared. Check the official HYROX site for London and UK race dates, then build your block backwards from the date.

Do I need to be a runner to do HYROX?

You need to be able to run 8km โ€” but broken into 1km efforts, which changes everything. In our experience the bigger limiter for most first-timers is strength at the sleds, not the running. A proper prep block builds both, together. That’s the core of good HYROX training London or anywhere else.

Sled work and compromised running build the engine, but the strength behind the sled has to be built deliberately too โ€” especially if you’re past 40. See how we programme strength training after 40 at BTX.
